In 2014, Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu wrote an exclusive article for Haaretz in which he called for a global boycott of Israel and urged Israelis and Palestinians to look beyond their leaders for a sustainable solution to the crisis in the Holy Land. The following is an excerpt:

The past weeks have witnessed unprecedented action by members of civil society across the world against the injustice of Israel’s disproportionately brutal response to the firing of missiles from Palestine.

If you add together all the people who gathered over the past weekend to demand justice in Israel and Palestine – in Cape Town, Washington, D.C., New York, New Delhi, London, Dublin and Sydney, and all the other cities – this was arguably the largest active outcry by citizens around a single cause ever in the history of the world.

A quarter of a century ago, I participated in some well-attended demonstrations against apartheid. I never imagined we’d see demonstrations of that size again, but last Saturday’s turnout in Cape Town was as big if not bigger. Participants included young and old, Muslims, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Buddhists, agnostics, atheists, blacks, whites, reds and greens ... as one would expect from a vibrant, tolerant, multicultural nation.

I asked the crowd to chant with me: “We are opposed to against the injustice of the illegal occupation of Palestine. We are opposed to the indiscriminate killing in Gaza. We are opposed to the indignity meted out to Palestinians at checkpoints and roadblocks. We are opposed to violence perpetrated by all parties. But we are not opposed to Jews.

 Unlike the majority — if not all — of his fellow Christian bishops and archbishops, Nobel peace laureate Desmond Tutu was not a cowardly hypocrite who shied away from his Christian duty to condemn Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people because as was declared by the Human Rights Campaign (HRC), “To stand with Palestine is to stand with Humanity.” Christian religious and political leaders, however — the same despicable breed who with hypocritical moral indignation condemned Apartheid in South Africa — have continued to subserviently go along with Israel’s asinine assertion that its terrifying transgressions against Palestinians represents “a right to defend itself.

Le 29 novembre 1947, les représentants de 33 pays à l’ONU votaient la Résolution 181 de partage de la Palestine en 3 entités : un État juif, un État arabe et une administration internationale pour Jérusalem/Bethléem. Cette résolution, appuyée par les 2 grandes puissances, USA de Truman et URSS de Staline, ne fut jamais appliquée et déclencha la guerre, provoquée par la proclamation unilatérale de l’État juif le 14 mai 1948. Pour commémorer ce sinistre anniversaire, j’ai parlé avec le militant propalestinien des droits humains vivant à Londres, William Hanna, à propos de son nouveau livre « The broken promise of a promised land », qui dit ses quatre vérités sur le judaïsme, le sionisme, l'occupation et la violation des droits des Palestiniens. Un livre courageux et authentique.

 

Pourquoi avez-vous choisi le titre THE BROKEN PROMISE OF A PROMISED LAND pour votre nouveau livre ?

La déclaration d'indépendance d'Israël a été proclamée le 14 mai 1948 par David Ben-Gourion, chef exécutif de l'Organisation sioniste mondiale et président de l'Agence juive pour la Palestine, avec la promesse qu'Israël « favorisera le développement du pays au profit de tous ses habitants ; il sera fondé sur la liberté, la justice et la paix telles qu'envisagées par les prophètes d'Israël ; il assurera une égalité complète des droits sociaux et politiques à tous ses habitants sans distinction de religion, de race ou de sexe ; il garantira la liberté de religion, de conscience, de langue, d'éducation et de culture ; il sauvegardera les Lieux Saints de toutes les religions ; et il sera fidèle aux principes de la Charte des Nations Unies ».

Puis, sans aucun scrupule ni délai, l'Israël sioniste a commencé - et continue de le faire depuis - le nettoyage ethnique de la population palestinienne indigène : une "catastrophe" connue sous le nom de Nakba, qui a entraîné la dépossession barbare et traumatisante d'environ 750 000 réfugiés - avec  quelque 530  villages  détruits  et  environ  13  000 Palestiniens tués - et le déracinement des deux tiers de la population arabe palestinienne et de sa société. Pourtant, bien qu'il s'agisse d'une revendication palestinienne fondamentale, la Nakba continue d'être blanchie ou niée purement et simplement par les experts, les lobbyistes et   même        les     décideurs politiques         des    sociétés      dites  civilisées    et      justes, prétendument engagées en faveur des droits de l'homme pour tous.

November 1947 stimmten die Vertreter von 33 Ländern in der UNO für die Resolution 181, die eine Aufteilung Palästinas in drei Einheiten vorsah: einen jüdischen Staat, einen arabischen Staat und eine internationale Verwaltungszone (Corpus separatum) für Jerusalem/Bethlehem. Diese Resolution, die von den beiden Großmächten, Trumans USA und Stalins UdSSR, unterstützt wurde, wurde nie umgesetzt und löste den Krieg aus, der durch die einseitige Ausrufung des jüdischen Staates am 14. Mai 1948 provoziert wurde. Anlässlich dieses unheilvollen Jahrestages sprach ich mit dem in London lebenden pro-palästinensischen Menschenrechtsaktivisten William Hanna über sein Buch „The broken promise of a promised land“ [„Das gebrochene Versprechen eines gelobten Landes“], in dem er die Wahrheit über Judentum, Zionismus, Besatzung und die Verletzung der Menschenrechte der Palästinenser offen ausspricht. Warum haben Sie für Ihr neues Buch den Titel THE BROKEN PROMISE OF A PROMISED LAND gewählt?

Die israelische Unabhängigkeitserklärung wurde am 14. Mai 1948 von David Ben-Gurion, dem Geschäftsführer der Zionistischen Weltorganisation und Vorsitzenden der Jüdischen Agentur für Palästina, verkündet. Er versprach in diesem Rahmen Folgendes: Israel würde sich um „die Entwicklung des Landes für das Wohl aller seiner Bewohner kümmern; es würde auf Freiheit, Gerechtigkeit und Frieden beruhen, wie es die Propheten Israels vorgesehen haben; außerdem würde Israel allen seinen Einwohnern unabhängig von Religion, ethnischer Zugehörigkeit oder Geschlecht die vollständige Gleichheit der sozialen und politischen Rechte zuerkennen; Israel würde die Religions-, Gewissens-, Sprach-, Bildungs- und Kulturfreiheit gewährleisten; schließlich würde Israel die heiligen Stätten aller Religionen schützen und den Grundsätzen der Charta der Vereinten Nationen treu bleiben.“

Daraufhin begann das zionistische Israel ohne jegliche Bedenken und ohne jegliche Verzögerung – und hat diese auch seitdem fortgeführt – die ethnische Säuberung der indigenen palästinensischen Bevölkerung. Diese „Katastrophe“ ist als Nakba bekannt. Darunter versteht man die barbarische und traumatische Enteignung von schätzungsweise 750.000 Flüchtlingen, die Zerstörung von etwa 530 Dörfern und die Tötung von ungefähr 13.000 Palästinensern. All dies geschah einher mit der Entwurzelung von zwei Dritteln der palästinensisch-arabischen Bevölkerung und ihrer gesellschaftlichen Struktur. Obwohl es sich hierbei vordergründig um einen Missstand handelt, der die Palästinenser betrifft, wird die Nakba weiterhin von Experten, Lobbyisten und sogar von politischen Entscheidungsträgern in sogenannten zivilisierten und gerechten Gesellschaften, die sich angeblich den Menschenrechten für alle verpflichtet haben, geschönt oder schlichtweg geleugnet.

Sie zeigen in Ihrem Werk auf, dass das Studium der Geschichte ausschlaggebend ist, um für die Menschenrechte zu kämpfen. Warum ist das so wichtig, wenn es um Palästina geht?

On 29 November 1947, the representatives of 33 countries at the UN voted Resolution 181 to divide Palestine into three entities: a Jewish state, an Arab state, and an international administration for Jerusalem/Bethlehem. This resolution, supported by the two great powers, Truman's USA and Stalin's USSR, was never implemented and triggered the war, which was provoked by the unilateral proclamation of the Jewish State on 14 May 1948. To commemorate this sinister anniversary, I talked to the pro-Palestinian human rights activist based in London, William Hanna about his book “The broken promise of a promised land”, telling openly the truth on Judaism, Zionism, occupation, and violation of human rights of the Palestinians. A brave and true book.

Why did you choose the title THE BROKEN PROMISE OF A PROMISED LAND for your new book?

The Israeli Declaration of Independence, was proclaimed on 14 May 1948 by David Ben-Gurion, — the Executive Head of the World Zionist Organization and Chairman of the Jewish Agency for Palestine — with the pledge that Israel would “foster the development of the country for the benefit of all its inhabitants; it will be based on freedom, justice and peace as envisaged by the prophets of Israel; it will ensure complete equality of social and political rights to all its inhabitants irrespective of religion, race or sex; it will guarantee freedom of religion, conscience, language, education and culture; it will safeguard the Holy Places of all religions; and it will be faithful to the principles of the Charter of the United Nations.”

Then without any compunction or delay, Zionist Israel began — and has continued to do so ever since — the ethnic cleansing of the indigenous Palestinian population: a “catastrophe” known as the Nakba, which involved the barbaric and traumatic dispossession of an estimated 750,000 refugees —with some 530 villages destroyed and approximately 13,000 Palestinians killed  — and the uprooting of two-thirds of the Palestinian Arab population and their society. Yet despite this being a core Palestinian grievance, the Nakba continues to be whitewashed or denied outright by pundits, lobbyists, and even policymakers in so-called civilised and just societies allegedly committed to human rights for all.
