If socialism were a “sin” or a crime, why would a socialist candidate have won the mayoralty of New York, the most representative city of capitalism? Socialism is the highest achievement to which politics—understood as care for others—can aspire. Authentic socialists seek to make human freedoms effective, those that truly guarantee dignity. Socialism is “good living”: that nothing necessary should be lacking for any of us, without distinction of skin color, beliefs, sexual orientation or social class. No one is free until they have secured their freedom to be well nourished, their freedom to obtain good health care, good education, a safe home, and a dignified job. Capitalism is a raffle cage of hamsters running endlessly in circles so that every two weeks they can buy the few freedoms the market offers them.

That Zohran Mamdani, a socialist of Indian origin, has conquered the New York mayoralty is a breath of fresh air, the possibility of spreading socialist thought, refining the ideological line, reorganizing social bases, and strengthening a great party of manual and intellectual workers not only in the United States but in Latin America and the world.

The rejection, obstruction and crushing of socialist projects have historically been ordered from Washington and New York, the anti-communist capitals of the planet. Like an extension of the Ku Klux Klan, they demonized everything suspected of being “red”; on U.S. soil any allusion to socialism was prohibited, McCarthyism was born, figures accused of being communist were persecuted and expelled (Charlie Chaplin, the great comic actor, among them), and the labor movement was dismantled.

But history keeps surprising us with its dialectical turns and paradoxes. Today, in the 21st century, in the year 2025, while another Henry Kissinger reappears with his Operation Condor that filled Latin America with dictatorships that demonized, persecuted, tortured and assassinated thousands of socialists, a migrant with socialist thinking wins the mayoralty of New York. It happens that the new emperor, Donald Trump, listens in his Oval Office to the “extraterrestrial” Mamdani, accepted into the political sphere reluctantly.

Socialism has slipped into the country that banned it. It finds its way into the Big Apple, strolls down Wall Street. “I would prefer not to,” Bartleby would say. But this is an idea that has circulated for more than a century and a half—an idea forced to face attacks of all kinds, from all sorts of civil, ecclesiastical, and military authorities. They will have to learn to live with it; no one knows what they will try to do to topple it, just as they did in many other countries.

Si le socialisme était un « péché » ou un crime, pourquoi un candidat socialiste aurait-il gagné la mairie de New York, la ville la plus représentative du capitalisme ? Les socialistes authentiques cherchent à rendre effectives les libertés humaines, celles qui garantissent véritablement la dignité. Le socialisme, c’est le bien-vivre : c’est-à-dire que rien de nécessaire ne manque à personne, sans distinction de couleur de peau, de croyances, d’orientation sexuelle ou de classe sociale. Personne n’est libre tant qu’il ne satisfait pas sa liberté d’être bien nourri, sa liberté d’accéder à une bonne santé, une bonne éducation, un toit sûr, un travail digne. Le capitalisme est une cage à roue de hamsters tournant en rond pour que, tous les quinze jours, ils puissent acheter les quelques libertés que leur offre le marché.

Que Zohran Mamdani, un socialiste d’origine indienne, ait conquis la mairie de New York constitue un appel d’air, la possibilité de diffuser la pensée socialiste, d’affiner la ligne idéologique, de réorganiser les bases sociales et de renforcer un grand parti de travailleurs manuels et intellectuels, non seulement aux USA mais aussi en Amérique latine et dans le monde entier.

Les rejets, blocages et écrasements des projets socialistes ont historiquement été ordonnés depuis Washington et New York, capitales anticommunistes de la planète. À la manière d’une extension du Ku Klux Klan, ils ont diabolisé tout ce qui semblait « rouge » ; sur le sol des USA, toute allusion au socialisme fut interdite, le maccarthysme (stigmatisation des personnes de gauche) naquit, on persécuta et expulsa des personnalités accusées d’être communistes (Charles Chaplin, grand acteur comique, parmi d’autres) et on dévitalisa le mouvement syndical.

Mais l’histoire continue de nous surprendre par ses tournants dialectiques et ses paradoxes. Aujourd’hui, au XXI^e siècle, en 2025, tandis qu’un nouveau Henry Kissinger ressuscite avec son Opération Condor qui remplit l’Amérique latine de dictatures ayant diabolisé, persécuté, torturé et assassiné des milliers de socialistes, un migrant à la pensée socialiste remporte la mairie de New York. Il se trouve que le nouvel empereur Donald Trump écoute dans le Bureau ovale « l’extraterrestre » Mamdani, accepté dans la sphère politique à contrecœur.

Le socialisme s’est glissé dans le pays qui l’a proscrit. Il se fraie un chemin dans la Grande Pomme, se promène à Wall Street. « Je préférerais ne pas », dirait Bartleby. Mais il s’agit d’une idée en circulation depuis plus d’un siècle et demi, une idée contrainte d’affronter des attaques de toute sorte, de la part de toutes les autorités civiles, ecclésiastiques et militaires. Elles devront apprendre à cohabiter avec elle ; on ne sait pas encore ce qu’elles trameront pour la renverser, comme ils l’ont fait dans tant d’autres pays.

Si el socialismo fuera “pecado” o delito, ¿por qué un candidato socialista ganó la alcaldía de Nueva York, la ciudad más representativa del capitalismo? El socialismo es la realización máxima a la que puede aspirar la política entendida ésta como el cuidado del otro. Los socialistas auténticos buscan hacer efectivas las libertades humanas, las que garantizan verdaderamente la dignidad. Socialismo es el buen vivir, es decir, que nada necesario nos falte a todos, sin distinción de piel, creencias, orientación sexual, clase social. Nadie es libre mientras no satisfaga su libertad de estar bien nutrido, su libertad de tener buena atención en salud, su libertad de acceder a una buena educación, su libertad de disponer de un techo seguro, su libertad de tener un trabajo digno. El capitalismo es una jaula tómbola de hamsters dando vueltas alrededor de lo mismo para que cada quince días pueda comprar las pocas libertades que le ofrece el mercado.

Ocurre que el nuevo emperador Donald Trump escucha en su Oficina Oval al “extraterreste” Mamdani, aceptado en la esfera política a regañadientes.

تنهال علينا الأخبار السارّة كهدايا من السماء. ففي وسائل الإعلام يُقدَّم كلّ شيء كهزائم وكوارث، لكن لم نشهد منذ زمن طويل تغييرًا يبعث الأمل.

وإليكم القائمة: يشهد الإسرائيليون والفلسطينيون تسارعًا في في عملية توسّع رقعة الصراع ليأخذ بعدًا دوليا ؛ وقد أقرّ مجلس الأمن التابع للأمم المتحدة قرارًا يسير في الاتجاه الصحيح؛ وتُعاد إسرائيل إلى حجمها الحقيقي بسرعة مشجّعة، كما أن مصير الفلسطينيين يُنتزَع أكثر فأكثر من سيطرتها الحصرية. من الصعب طلب المزيد. فما عُرض في إسرائيل كسلسلة من الهزائم المهينة هو في الواقع مجموعة من التطورات المشجّعة.

أهمّ هذه التطورات هو إعادة إسرائيل إلى حجمها الفعلي. فالقوة العظمى عادت قوة عظمى، ودولة تابعة عادت إلى مكانها الطبيعي. لقد انتهت الحالة التي كان يصعب فيها معرفة من في جيب من؛ ذلك التشوّش في الأدوار بين القوة العظمى والدولة التابعة، الذي استمرّ عقودًا، قد وصل إلى نهايته. وهذه أنباء جيّدة لإسرائيل.

لقد مات جنونُ العظمة، وانتهى وهمُ الدولة بعظمتها وقدرتها المطلقة. وهذا أمر جيّد. لم يعد بإمكان إسرائيل أن تفعل ما تشاء. كان لا بدّ لمجازر غزة أن تنتهي – ليس لأن رئيس الوزراء بنيامين نتنياهو أراد ذلك، بل لأن الرئيس الأميركي دونالد ترامب أمر بذلك. ولولا تدخّله لاستمرّت المجازر.

 أما «الهزيمة» المتمثلة في صفقة تزويد السعودية بطائرات F-35 فليست بالضرورة هزيمة. فقد تؤدّي لامركزية السلاح في المنطقة إلى كبح إسرائيل، التي تصرّفت حتى اليوم كبلطجيّ الحيّ الذي يخشاه الجميع: تقصف وتغتال في كل مكان، وتنتهك كلّ سيادة ممكنة، ويُسمح لها بكل شيء ولا تُعاقَب على شيء.

لقد انتهى هذا الأمر، وهذا جيّد لإسرائيل، لأن كثيرًا من الكوارث التي حلّت بها كانت نتيجة مباشرة لغطرستها وعدوانيتها، وكأنّ لا دولة غيرها في المنطقة. الآن هناك دولة أخرى. لن تكون إسرائيل الوحيدة في الجوار التي تمتلك أحدث طائرة مقاتلة في العالم؛ ولن تبقى هذه القدرة حكرًا عليها، و ستضطر للتفكير مليًا قبل غارتها التالية في المنطقة.

كما أنّ استحواذ الولايات المتحدة على إدارة ما يجري في غزة تطوّرٌ إيجابي أيضًا. فعلى مدى عقود، وخصوصًا خلال العامين الماضيين، شاهدنا ما تجيد إسرائيل فعله في القطاع. والنتيجة: غزة أصبحت مقبرة. هناك الآن لاعب جديد في الساحة؛ فلنرَ ما يمكنه أن يفعل. لا يمكن أن يكون أسوأ مما فعلته إسرائيل.

وقد يؤدّي نزع السيطرة من يد إسرائيل إلى عملية مماثلة في الضفة الغربية. إنّ الأمر يقترب من حلم. فقد يؤدّي دخول قوّة دولية إلى الضفة الغربية إلى إنهاء الوضع الذي تعيش فيه أمة بلا حماية ولا حقوق، بينما تسيء إليها أمة أخرى بلا انقطاع. لا يزال هذا رؤية بعيدة، لكنه قد يتحقق.

 

وفي الوقت نفسه، تعزّز الولايات المتحدة علاقاتها مع السعودية. كيف يضرّ هذا بإسرائيل تحديدًا؟ إنّ إسرائيل تطالب بالفعل بتعويض عن فقدان «تفوقها العسكري النوعي»، وكأنّ هذا التفوّق مُنح لها بوعد إلهي إلى جانب حقّها الحصري بهذه الأرض. على أي أساس تعتقد إسرائيل أنها وحدها تستحق الحق في التسلّح حتى الأسنان؟

هجمات في كل مرة يحدث فيها ما لا يعجبها، وانتهاكات صارخة لوقف إطلاق النار، واغتيالات وأعمال إرهاب: لا تعتقد إسرائيل فقط أن كل شيء مباح لها، بل تقتنع أيضًا بأن شيئًا لا يحقّ لغيرها.

لقد أفسدت هذه العقليةُ الدولةَ، وربما حان الآن الوقت لنهايتها. فإسرائيل أقلّ طموحًا وأكثر تواضعًا، وأقلّ تسليحًا بأسلحة هجومية، قد تكون لها فرصة في أن تُقبَل أكثر في المنطقة.
