Amparo Ochoa

Escuchen, señores, oigan el corrido,

de un triste acontecimiento;

quiso darles libertad;

cuando andaba por las sierras;

mientras yo viva, los indios

serán dueños de sus tierras

Amapolita olorosa

de las lomas de Guerrero,

no volverás a ver nunca

dizque para apaciguarlo;

y no pudiendo a la buena

un plan ponen pa' engañarlo.

Canta, canta, gorrioncito,

di en tu canción melodiosa;

cayo el general Zapata

en forma muy alevosa.

Don Pablo González ordena a Guajardo

que le finja un rendimiento,

y al jefe Zapata disparan sus armas

al llegar al campamento.

Guajardo dice a Zapata:

— me le rindo con mi tropa,

en Chinameca lo espero,

tomaremos una copa.

Arroyito revoltoso,

— ¿que te dijo aquel clavel?

dice que no ha muerto el jefe,

que Zapata ha de volver.

Abraza Emiliano al felón Guajardo

en prueba de su amistad,

sin pensar el pobre que aquel pretoriano

lo iba a sacrificar.

Y tranquilo se dirige

a la hacienda con su escolta;

los traidores le disparan

por la espalda a quemarropa.

Jilguerito mañanero

de las cumbres soberano,

¡mira en que forma tan triste

ultimaron a Emiliano!

Cayó del caballo el jefe Zapata

y también sus asistentes

así en Chinameca perdieron la vida

un puñado de valientes.

Señores, ya me despido,

que no tengo novedad

cual héroe murió Zapata

por dar tierra y libertad.

A la orilla de un camino

había una blanca azucena,

a la tumba de Zapata

la llevé como una ofrenda...

The ballad of the Death of Emiliano Zapata

Amparo Ochoa

Listen, gentlemen, listen to this ballad

of a tragic occurrence that came to pass:

well, in Chinameca1 at close range

the great insurgent Zapata was killed.

April of 1919

in the memories of the peasants

you will remain

like a stain in history.

Bells of Villa Ayala2

why do you ring so sorrowfully?

-— it is because Zapata has died

and Zapata was a brave man.

The good Emiliano loved the poor folks,

he wanted to give them their freedom;

that's why the natives of all of the towns

went to fight alongside him.

From Cuautla to Amecameca,

Matamoros to Ajusco,

with his Carranclane soldiers

Don Porfirio was pleased,

In the fields of bougainvillea

in the meadows of Morelos,

if they ask for Zapata,

tell them he has gone to heaven.

His faithful assistant said

that when he was walking through the mountains;

he told him: — while I still live, the natives

will be owners of their lands.

Little fragrant poppy

from the hills of Guerrero,

you will never again see

the famous guerrilla fighter.

With great sorrow he tells his wife:

I am very crestfallen,

while everyone rests, I am a vagabond3,

like a bird without a nest.

Generals come and go

it's supposedly to appease him;

and they couldn't come up with

a good plan to deceive him.

Sing, sing, little sparrow

sing in your melodious song:

General Zapata has fallen,

in the most treacherous way.

Don Pablo González4 ordered Guajardo

to feign his surrender,

and to shoot General Zapata

upon arriving at his camp.

Guajardo tells Zapata:

— I will surrender with my troops,

I'll wait for you in Chinameca,

we'll have a drink together there.

Little unruly stream,

— what did that fool tell you?

they say the General is not dead,

that Zapata will return.

Emiliano embraced that criminal Guajardo

as a sign of amnesty,

the poor man oblivious that that

loyal subordinate would bring his demise.

And calmly he heads

towards the Hacienda with his escorts;

the traitors shoot him

in the back at point-blank range.

Little morning nightingale

sovereign of the summits,

look at the sad way

they have finished Emiliano off!

General Zapata fell off his horse

and so did his assistants,

there in Chinameca a handful of brave men

lost their lives.

Gentlemen, I bid you farewell

for I have no news,

for the hero Zapata has died

for giving land and freedom back.

On the edge of a path

there was a white lily,

to the grave of Zapata

I brought it as an offering...
